Rationale: After compiling a research report in to Carbon Fibre a form of support or walking aid made from the material would make great use of its properties, dramatically reducing the weight and benefit the user with a bespoke design in comparison to those standardized designs available on the market.
This turns the preconception of carbon fibre a normally inaccessable specialist material used only in expensive products, sterotypically race cars, high grade sports equipment on its head making using the material to benefit those with less money and greater need.
I believe from my research those that benefit most from the use of the material in aid design will be those that have a long term walking difficulties resorting to using aid for long periods. The desired lighter weight, ergonomics, fitting and overall aesthetics will give the user a better quality of life enabling them to perform daily tasks despite their impairment, with the walking aid doing just that ‘aiding’ them rather than hindering and adding further discomfort to their lives.
The design has to be considered for frequent and prolonged use so cannot be obtrusive in size, weighing less than 400g singular or as a pair 800g and must offer a large of fittings for differentiating sizes of persons with the key anthropometric adjustments of the forearms, legs/ torso and overall height. This is a long term solution so it will need to use high grade materials througout to maintain the quality of the product.
The solution should be a product that offers an alternative to the poorly considered designs on the market, giving the user a more satisfactory and centric design that benefits them in everyday situations. The age range use of the aid should be between 10 – 90 years abiding by the current British and International Standards in place which stipulates it must support weights up to 120 kg (18.9 stone).
